Role Of Kali Linux in Ethical Hacking | How to Install Kali Linux in PC | Basic Ethical Hacking Course

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Our Second Article of  'How to be an Ethical Hacker'. We are on the way to becoming Ethical Hackers. In the first article, we learned about Ethical Hacking. Today, We are going to discuss Kali Linux Operating System. If you want to be an Ethical Hacker then you need to learn about Kali Linux.

Basically Kali Linux is an Operating System On top of the Greatest Linux system for Penetration Testing is Kali Linux. Kali Linux is Debian-based Linux Distribution (Distro) for safety auditing and primarily for penetration Examination. Kali Linux is the world's most powerful and popular Operating system used for penetration testing.Kali Linux is meant to applied for Security-related jobs. This Operating System is used by security professionals in a broad range of specializations, including penetration testing, reverse engineering, digital forensics and Vulnerability Assessment.

Kali Linux earns more quality and keeps growing since MR. ROBOT scene displayed the Computer System with Kali Linux Operating System in particular Scenes.

HISTORY

The Kali Linux project began quietly in 2012 but the first release (version 1.0) happened one year later, in March 2013. It was developed by "Offensive Security", sent with amazing GNOME3 as its desktop environment, which does Kali Linux work a bit heavily on low spec computer hardware. Kali UNIX was reworked from " BackTrack Linux Project" work. Kali Linux comes with a large amount of ability testing instruments from different areas and digital forensics tools. Kali Linux supports the broad variety of devices, including i386, amd64, and ARM structure. Kali Linux has likewise produced this initial open reference Android penetration testing structure for Nexus devices, it is Kali Linux NetHunter.

GETTING STARTED WITH KALI LINUX

In order to Install Kali Linux in your regular PC, You have two methods i.e, Dual Booting and Virtualization. In Dual Boot, RAM capacity is fully dedicated to currently running Operating System(OS) which results in OS to run fast. But drawback of using dual boot is if you want to switch over to the another OS , you have to Shut down the running OS first. On the Other Hand, In Virtual Box, RAM capacity is divided between two Operating Systems resulting in functionality of both the OS's SLOW ,this is the only main drawback of VB. But switching over another OS's is easy and fast.

I recommend Virtualization over Dual Boot. Installing Kali Linux in any Virtual Machine :

Prerequisites:

  • At least 20 GB of disk space

  • At least 1 GB of RAM (preferably 2) for i386 and amd64 architectures

  • VirtualBox (or alternative virtualization software)

  • You must connected to internet

Step 1 - First download Oracle Virtual Box from its trusted Website.

Step 2 - Now, You have to download Kali Linux ISO File. This can be installed from Official Website of Kali Linux. Visit the website and download the packages. Depending on the system you have, download the 64 bit or 32 bit version.

Step 3 - After downloading the .iso file, open your oracle virtual box and create a new virtual machine and import Kali as its OS.

CREATE VIRTUAL BOX CONTAINER

1. Launch VirtualBox and click the New icon.

2. Name and operating system. A pop-up window for creating a new VM appears. Specify a name and a destination folder. In name, Kali Linux then it will automati select the other fields. Click Next.

3. Memory size. Choose how much memory to allocate to the virtual machine and click Next. The default setting for Linux is 1024 MB. However, this will depend on your needs.

4. Hard disk. The default option is to create a virtual hard disk for the new Virtual Machine. Click Create to continue. Beginners can use a recreated virtual hard disk file.

5. Hard disk file type. Use the default file type for the new virtual hard disk, VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image). Click Next to continue.

6. Storage on a physical hard disk. Decide between Dynamically allocated and Fixed size. The first choice allows the new hard disk to grow and fill up space dedicated to it. The second, fixed size, uses the maximum capacity from the start. Click Next.

7. File location and size. Specify the name and where you want to store the virtual hard disk. Choose the amount of file data the VM is allowed to store on the hard disk. We advise giving it at least 10 GB. Click Create to finish. Now you created a new VM.

CONFIGURE VIRTUAL MACHINE SETTINGS

1. Select a Kali Linux VM and click the Settings icon.

2. Go to System > Motherboard. Set the boot order to start from Optical, followed by Hard Disk. Uncheck Floppy as it is unnecessary.

3. Now, navigate to Storage settings. Add the downloaded Kali iso file to a storage device under Controller: IDE. Click the disk icon to search for the image. Once finished, close the Settings window.

4. Click the Start icon to begin installing Kali.

INSTALLING AND SETTING UP KALI LINUX

When you start Kali Machine, a new VM VirtualBox window appears with the Kali welcome screen. Select the Graphical install option and go through the following installation steps;

1. Select a language. Choose the default language for the system.

2. Select your location. Find and select your country from the list.

3. Configure the keyboard. Decide which keymap to use. You can select American English.
4. Configure the network. First, enter a hostname for the system you can write kali in hostname and click Continue.

5. Next, create a domain name or you can also leave it blank.

6. Set up users and passwords. Create a strong root password for the system administrator account.

7. Configure the clock. Select your time zone from the available options.

8. Partition disks. Select how you would like to partition the hard disk. Unless you have a good reason to do it manually, go for the Guided —use entire disk option. Click on Continue.

9. Then, select which disk you want to use for partitioning. As you created a single virtual hard disk in Step 3: Adjust VM Settings, you do not have to worry about data loss. Select the only available option - (sda) - 68.7 GB ATA VBOK HARDDISK _(theuetailsafter the dash vary depending on your virtualization software).

OR

Again Click on Continue.

10. Next, select the scheme for partitioning. If you are a new user, go for All files in one partition.

11. Click on 'Finish partitioning and write change to disk' and then Continue.

12. The wizard starts installing Kali. While the installation bar loads, additional configuration settings appear. OR Select YES and then click on Continue.

13. Configure the package manager. Select whether you want to use a network mirror (select YES for newbies) and click Continue. Enter the HTTP proxy information if you are using one. Otherwise, leave the field blank and click Continue again. 14. Install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk. Select Yes and Continue. Then, select a boot loader device to ensure the newly installed system is bootable.

15. Once you receive the message Installation is complete, click Continue to reboot your VirtualBox. Now, you have successfully installed Kali Linux on VirtualBox. After rebooting, the Kali login screen appears. Type in a username (root) and password you entered in the previous steps. Finally, Kali Linux is now ready to work.
